Fundamental Movement Skills · Lesson 4 of 6
Throw and Move
Learning objective: To throw and catch while moving and to move into a space to receive.
Success criteria
- I can throw to a partner who is moving.
- I can move into a space to receive a ball.
- I can call my partner's name before throwing.
Equipment
- 15 soft balls
- 20 cones
- Bibs in two colours
Organisation & set-up
Large grid (approx. 15m x 15m) marked with cones. Pairs share one ball.
Warm-up: Space Explorers
6 mins- Pupils move around the grid filling the spaces.
- On 'pairs', link with a partner; on 'go', move apart again.
- Change the locomotor action: skip, side-step, gallop.
Skill introduction & demonstration
5 minsDemonstrate moving into a space: look up, find a space away from others, show hands as a target. Thrower waits until the receiver is ready.

Skill development 1: Pass and Follow
7 mins- Throw to a partner then run to a new space.
- Partner catches, looks, and throws back.
- Count passes in 60 seconds.
Skill development 2: Gate Passing
7 mins- Spread pairs of cones around the grid as gates.
- Pairs pass through as many gates as possible in 90 seconds.
- Each pass must go through a gate.
Main activity: Pass Five
10 mins- Teams of four (one bib colour each).
- Make five passes in a row to score a point.
- Defenders must stay an arm's length away; no snatching.
- Rotate teams every 3 minutes.
Coaching points & teaching cues
- Look before you throw
- Throw to where your partner is going
- Show hands as a target
- Move after you pass
Common mistakes & corrections
- Everyone crowds the ball: Freeze and ask 'Where is the space?'
- Throws behind a moving partner: Aim slightly ahead of the receiver.
- Receiver hides behind defender: Move side-on to find a clear line.
Easier challenges
- Allow the receiver to stay still.
- Use a smaller group and no defenders.
Harder challenges
- Limit to three seconds before passing.
- Add one-handed catches for bonus points.
Inclusion & SEND adaptations
Adaptations
- Use larger, softer or brighter balls (e.g. beanbags, balloons, sensory balls) for pupils who find tracking difficult.
- Offer a seated or stationary version of each task; pair with a supportive peer.
- Use visual cue cards and demonstrate rather than relying only on verbal instructions.
Maximising participation
- Keep groups small (2-4) so every pupil has many turns.
- Avoid elimination games; use points or personal bests instead.
- Rotate roles (thrower, catcher, coach, scorer) so everyone has a purpose.
Assessment opportunities
- Observe decision making: does the pupil look before throwing?
- Can the pupil move into space?
Plenary & reflection questions
- How did you help your partner catch?
- Where was the best space?
- What does 'pass and move' mean?
