Throwing & Catching Foundations

Six lessons that build confident underarm and overarm throwing and two-handed catching through playful, high-activity games.

Unit overview

Pupils develop the core sending and receiving skills that underpin almost every team game. The unit moves from rolling and tracking a ball, to underarm throwing for accuracy, to catching at different heights, and finishes with simple cooperative and competitive throwing games.

Prior learning

  • Can move safely around a space, stopping and starting on a signal.
  • Has experienced handling beanbags and soft balls in EYFS.

Learning objectives

  • Roll, throw underarm and throw overarm with increasing control.
  • Catch a ball with two hands using a 'ready' position.
  • Track a moving object and move feet to get in line with it.
  • Apply throwing and catching in simple cooperative and competitive games.

Progression of skills

  • Lesson 1: rolling and stopping a ball
  • Lesson 2: underarm throw for accuracy
  • Lesson 3: two-handed catch from a partner
  • Lesson 4: throwing and catching on the move
  • Lesson 5: overarm throw for distance
  • Lesson 6: applying skills in team games

Assessment opportunities

emerging

Throws with little control; catches only when the ball is placed into their hands.

developing

Throws underarm towards a target with some accuracy; catches a gentle throw from 2-3 metres most of the time.

secure

Selects underarm or overarm throws for accuracy or distance; catches consistently while moving feet into line with the ball.

End-of-unit outcomes

  • Most pupils can throw underarm to hit a large target from 3 metres.
  • Most pupils can catch a gentle throw with two hands.
  • Pupils can explain one teaching point for throwing and one for catching.
